Brand Strategy, Logo and Visual Identity

Great Books Foundation has spent more than 70 years leading the way in shared inquiry, using close reading and discussion to build critical thinking skills in readers of all ages. But an organization built on discourse and dialogue was still being visually represented as a publisher of books, a category increasingly seen as dated in a digital-first world. The brand needed to reflect what Great Books Foundation actually does: convene people, not just print pages.
Brand Vision
Substance reinterpreted the Great Books Foundation mark, transforming a literal stack of books into a series of ascending steps. The shift is subtle but significant: rather than anchoring the brand to a physical format increasingly seen as outdated, the new mark suggests a path, a journey toward learning and lifelong critical thinking. It moved Great Books Foundation out of the library stacks and into a more contemporary, forward-facing identity.
The system extended across the full print catalog, the website, and a sub-brand architecture built to support Great Books Foundation’s range of K-12 and adult programming under one consistent visual language.
The rebrand gave a 70-year-old institution a visual identity that matches the sophistication of its mission, positioning Great Books Foundation as a convener of ideas rather than simply a publisher. The refreshed system gave the organization a consistent presence across catalogs, digital platforms, and program materials, reinforcing their role at the center of critical thinking education nationally.
