Breaking Boundaries: From National to Global Impact

Despite serving members across six continents, the National Organization of Forensic Social Work faced an identity crisis. Their “national” branding created a perception barrier that undermined their true global reach and mission to advance social justice through interprofessional collaboration.

For an organization operating at the critical intersection of social work and legal systems worldwide, their name was limiting their ability to attract international members, secure global partnerships, and position themselves as the definitive leader in forensic social work education and advocacy.

Brand Vision

Substance partnered with NOFSW leadership to execute a comprehensive rebrand that would authentically reflect their international scope and collaborative spirit. The solution went far beyond aesthetics, it required rethinking their entire organizational identity. We evolved “National Organization of Forensic Social Work” to “Forensic Social Work Alliance”, a name that speaks directly to the solidarity, partnership, and global advocacy that defines their community. The shift from “organization” to “alliance” signals collaboration over hierarchy, inclusion over exclusion.

The iconic tree symbol was refined and abstracted, moving from literal representation to powerful symbolism. The new mark suggests organic growth, interconnected networks, and the global reach that defines modern forensic social work practice.
